Properly equipping and professionally maintaining chimneys can help them last 50 years or more. Regular cleaning of fireplace flues and ensuring that furnace flues are appropriately lined are just two of the most important things homeowners can do to extend their chimney’s life. The most important thing to do, however, is keeping the masonry of the chimney in good order.
Chimneys are free standing structures which are directly exposed to the elements from all sides. Rain, snow and ice degrade the bricks and mortar quicker than other areas of the house. Minor chimney repairs typically needed would be tuckpointing or repointing the deep mortar joints and holes, replacing clay flue tiles, and re-cementing the chimney crown (doming) to protect from rain and melting snow and help with watershed. If the bricks are chipped, you might also need brick restoration or brick replacement.
If you have an older house, the masonry may be too far gone to be repaired and you will need a full chimney rebuild, from at least the roofline up. This will be apparent if your chimney is leaning or showing signs of major brick deterioration and/or large voids between the bricks.
We do our best to find bricks that match your original ones – including antiques. We colour match the mortar and also finish the top of your chimney to replicate the period design.
